Preservation and Optimisation
The AFI FLAT.DUO is a precision-engineered system for the preservation and optimisation of vinyl and shellac records. This new technology, designed and manufactured in Germany, combines controlled heat, defined pressure and stabilised cooling to treat records safely and repeatably.
FLAT.DUO offers three operational modes:
· Relaxing (thermal tempering) to reduce internal material stress
· Flattening to correct visible warpage
· Shellac treatment with precisely adapted temperature control
Dual-disc operation allows two records to be processed simultaneously. In combination with active cooling, this supports efficient workflow without compromising accuracy or material integrity. All programmes allow for user alteration to cater for the most challenging of record conditions.
For Audiophiles: Relaxing as Tempering
For many audiophiles, the relaxing function is the primary application. This controlled thermal tempering process reduces residual internal stresses introduced during pressing, storage or handling — even in records that appear visually flat.
By allowing the vinyl to settle into a more mechanically stable state, groove geometry is stabilised and stylus tracing becomes more consistent. The audible result is greater clarity, improved low-level detail and a more coherent presentation. Playback remains faithful to the recording while benefiting from reduced mechanical interference.
Relaxing is therefore not cosmetic, but material optimisation in service of precise analogue reproduction.
For Second-Hand Record Retailers: Controlled Flattening
For second-hand record stores and professional resellers, the flattening mode offers clear practical benefit. Visible warpage can be corrected in a controlled and repeatable manner, improving playability and presentation prior to sale.
