Standard record storage means reading spines. Every album in the collection is a coloured rectangle, indistinguishable until you tilt your head and squint. It works — but it is nothing like the experience of browsing a record shop, where covers face forward, selection is immediate, and the collection itself becomes part of the room.
The SCA Record Storage and Display Cabinet is a KALLAX-based shelving unit, modified at the shelf heights to create the clearance that cover-forward display requires. The standard KALLAX compartment is designed for general storage; the SCA modification raises the shelf height to allow a 12” LP to stand with its cover facing forward, with sufficient space above to insert a hand, lift, browse, and return — the same ergonomic arrangement used in record retail.
How it works
Each shelf bay holds approximately 40 single-disc LPs, covers facing forward. A rear support holds records at 10 degrees off vertical — the slight lean that stops records from toppling while keeping them upright enough to display properly. A front tilt barrier provides a natural rest when pulling records forward to browse, and prevents records at the front from sliding out.
Bays are configurable as front-on or side-on, allowing the cabinet to be arranged to suit the room.
VRT shelf location tags
The shelf bay proportions are designed to accommodate VRT Storage Location tags. Each tag carries a QR code that identifies the shelf and position of a record in your collection — scan it with a phone and VRT locates the record in your library instantly. The modified shelf height leaves enough clear space for tags to be mounted at the front of each bay, visible and readable without moving any records.
If you use VRT to manage your collection, the cabinet is the physical counterpart: VRT knows where every record is, and the cabinet puts it exactly where VRT says it is.

Assembly
Each cabinet is sourced from IKEA, modified by SCA — shelf heights changed to the cover-forward specification — and repacked in the original flat pack packaging for delivery. The customer assembles the flat pack in the usual way; the modification is already done. If you have assembled a KALLAX before, the process will be identical.
