You open the package. The record is sealed. It’s new. And it’s warped.
It shouldn’t be this way. But increasingly, it is.
Reports of new vinyl arriving warped from online orders have become one of the most consistent complaints in collecting communities worldwide. A July 2025 investigation by Headphonesty described it directly: “Even records worth hundreds are arriving warped, scratched, and noisy straight out of the shrink wrap.” A user on Discogs reported wanting to return approximately 50% of new vinyl purchased in a single year. On StereoNET — an Australian forum — a thread titled “Most of my records are now arriving warped” documented one buyer’s experience with a European dealer: approximately 50–60% of records arriving in an unusable state.
This is not anecdote. It is a structural problem with two identifiable causes — and both are correctible. A third problem compounds both of them: new vinyl arrives electrostatically charged, and the charge does its damage the moment the sleeve comes off.
Why new records arrive warped
At the pressing plant. A vinyl record is pressed between heated stampers. After pressing, each disc must remain in the press through a cooling cycle — a period during which the PVC stabilises and sets flat. If the disc is removed before this cycle completes, it exits the press warm, soft, and susceptible to deformation under its own weight.
Pressing plants under sustained production pressure have increasingly shortened this cooling period to increase output. Record restoration expert Charles Kirmuss described the mechanism plainly in a 2025 livestream: “If I have a machine that can pop out a record every three minutes — if I now want to make an extra record an hour, what do I do? I’ll cut that time down. So those records don’t get to cool. They come out warped.”
The record is defective before it is sleeved. The buyer doesn’t find out until they play it.
During transit. Vinyl begins to soften at temperatures above approximately 60°C. A vehicle in direct sun — a delivery van parked in an urban loading zone, a courier truck sitting on a suburban street — can exceed this threshold within minutes. Indie labels in the United States documented records arriving warped during summer heatwaves, with some retailers advising customers to delay orders until temperatures dropped.
Australia presents this risk acutely. In many regions, ambient summer temperatures are already high enough that a standard courier delivery — even a short one — can expose a record to conditions that cause distortion. The record may look fine in its outer sleeve. The warp may only become apparent on the platter.
On arrival, electrostatically charged. New vinyl pressed from PVC carries a significant electrostatic charge — a consequence of the pressing process and the properties of the material. This charge persists through packaging and transit. Remove a new record from its inner sleeve for the first time and it immediately begins attracting airborne particles: dust, fibres, any contamination present in the surrounding air. What looked pristine inside the shrink wrap can be coated in particulate within seconds of being opened.
The combination is particularly damaging. A warped record attracts a layer of contamination the moment it is exposed, and that contamination is then ground into the groove with each revolution — at a stylus pressure increased by the warp itself.
Why it matters to play a warped record
A warped record does not just sound different — it tracks differently. The stylus is forced to navigate a path that rises and falls with each revolution, increasing lateral force on the groove walls at the point of the warp. The playback distortion is the audible symptom. The groove damage is the lasting consequence.
Most warps introduced through insufficient cooling or transit heat are not permanent deformations in the material. They are correctable. The groove geometry is intact. What is needed is controlled thermal treatment — the application of precisely managed heat and pressure to allow the PVC to relax back to a stable, flat state.
What the AFI FLAT.DUO does
The AFI FLAT.DUO is a precision-engineered system designed and manufactured in Germany for the preservation and optimisation of vinyl and shellac records. It operates through three modes: Relaxing (thermal tempering), Flattening, and Shellac treatment.
In Relaxing mode, the FLAT.DUO applies a controlled thermal tempering cycle that reduces internal stresses in the vinyl — including stresses that may not be visible as a warp but are nonetheless affecting playback and groove tracing. The audible result is greater clarity, improved low-level detail and a more coherent presentation. Relaxing is not cosmetic. It is material optimisation.
In Flattening mode, the FLAT.DUO corrects visible warpage under controlled pressure using precision-machined aluminium plates and torque-controlled contact rings. Most storage warps and transit warps — the gentle waves characteristic of insufficient press cooling or heat exposure during shipping — resolve in a single cycle.

What we now do during cleaning
We have updated our cleaning service to include a warp notification step.
When records arrive at our facility, they are assessed before treatment begins. If we identify warping — including the gentle deformations from insufficient press cooling, and the heat-ripple warps characteristic of transit exposure — we contact the customer before proceeding.
For orders placed as Standard Clean only, we will notify you of any warping found, describe what we are seeing, and recommend an upgrade to the Premium Restoration service, which includes both the Relaxing and Flattening modes on the AFI FLAT.DUO. You make the decision. We do not proceed with thermal treatment without your instruction.
This step matters because cleaning a warped record without addressing the warp is an incomplete service. A clean but warped disc will continue to force the stylus off-axis with every play — accumulating the same category of damage that the cleaning was intended to prevent.
Before any record is placed in the AFI FLAT.DUO, it is cleaned with Record Restore. There are two reasons this sequence matters. First, applying heat to a contaminated record risks working surface particles into the groove under the pressure of the flattening cycle. Second, Record Restore uses a proprietary antistatic surfactant formulation that eliminates the electrostatic charge binding contamination to the surface — and prevents it from reaccumulating. A record that has been through Record Restore is not just clean; it is static-neutral and will remain so. The FLAT.DUO then operates on vinyl that is uncontaminated and uncharged — the correct state for thermal treatment.
